What hate does

For years I’ve tried to put my finger on just the right description for the hate rags like the Sun and Daily Mail. They are very right wing, and have constant agenda pieces attacking single mothers, immigrants, foreigners, gays, liberals, thinkers etc. They don’t limit themselves to just cherry picking those stories to report, they actively seek them out. When the narrative doesn’t fit their agenda they adapt the story to fit, pulling it out of context because the overall agenda is more important than the truth.

I’ve finally figured out the right analogy for these rags. In the movie and novel Nineteen-Eighty-Four by George Orwell, the people are called for “two minutes of hate”. They are required to gather in a hall to watch a propaganda presentation by Big Brother laying out all the new facts. They are encouraged to yell and scream obscenities at the screen while it’s playing.

The Sun and Daily Mail are real life website equivalents. Every story is a hate story, written to inflame and anger. Readers are being conditioned in the same way as Nineteen-Eighty-Four to pour bile and hatred on the targets they choose. The narrative is that little England is a perfect place full of fairness and light, but it’s ruined by single mothers, immigrants and deviants.

Tell me I’m wrong. Pick a day at random to check either site. Look at the vast majority of their stories that day. TV news networks pull the same trick too, with FoxNews being the prime example. No matter what the reality of the story, it’s constantly spun and presented as “fair and balanced”.

They are nothing more than conductors of witch hunts spreading their bile under the false banner of “a free press”.
